Comparative assessment of the food purchase program and the national school feeding program's impact in Ubá, Minas Gerais, Brazil Ciência Rural
Oliveira,Leandro Gomes de; Batalha,Mário Otávio; Pettan,Kleber Batista.
ABSTRACT: The Food Purchase Program (PAA) and the National School Feeding Program (PNAE) are the main trading programs of Brazil that promote a connection between the family farm and institutional markets. The case study portrayed in this article aimed to evaluate and compare the socioeconomic impacts generated by the PAA and PNAE among Ubá's family farmers in Minas Gerais. To do this, two tipes of questionnaires were applied to managers and farmers who participate in the programs and obtained data were analyzed by descriptive statistic methods and non-parametric tests (Mann-Whitney). Results showed that the two policies present positive socioeconomic benefits to family farmers, although the PNAE's producers income be higher and the food prices traded in...

Evaluation of soil structure using participatory methods in the semiarid region of Brazil Rev. Ciênc. Agron.
Araújo,Ana Leônia de; Oliveira,Renato Teixeira de; Ferreira,Tiago Osório; Romero,Ricardo Espíndola; Oliveira,Teógenes Senna de.
Conservation practices are important in improving the environmental protection of agroecosystems in semiarid regions, as these are considered to be fragile environments. Soil-quality indicators are useful elements in evaluating the impact of some agricultural management practices, and the use of recognized indicators which are able to be measured by farmers is an innovative approach that seeks to integrate both scientific and local knowledge. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of various management practices through indicators of soil quality related to soil structure, in areas of family farming where agroecological consortiums are employed. These indicators were identified as important by the farmers themselves, and methodologies were suggested for...

Persistence of family farming, learning from its dynamics AgEcon
Calus, Mieke; Lauwers, Ludwig H..
Traditionally, the family farm has always been seen as a cornerstone of the agricultural production system. Given social, economic and political evidence (Calus, 2009), this organisational form might still continue to shape agricultural development. However, important changes in social and economic environment (e.g. industrialisation of agriculture, increased risk level and public vision on agriculture) become threats to the traditional model. A SWOT analysis of the family farms indicates the various intrinsic characteristics that make family farms resilient to changing conditions. Even in a changing economic and social landscape these aspects provide them with building blocks for creating new organisational forms or institutional arrangements. This paper...

“Plantar pro gasto”: a importância do autoconsumo entre famílias de agricultores do Rio Grande do Sul AgEcon
Grisa, Catia; Schneider, Sergio.
The article discusses the value and importance of the selfconsumption production in the social reproduction of the family units and it characterizes the food self-consumed. The paper used the research “Family Farm, Local Development and Pluriactivity” (UFRGS/ UFPel/CNPq-2003) that propitiated the formation of a database with information on the dynamics of the family farm in four areas different from the geography of the Rio Grande do Sul, your sources and types of income, among these the self-consumption. To bring this debate means to retake a theme little discussed until then, and that, although marginalized or considered without importance, it develops important role as income non monetary, strengthens the food security and it penetrates spheres of the...

Potentials and limits to generate employment and income by the National Programme for Production and Use of Biodiesel AgEcon
Ferreira, Vicente da Rocha Soares; Passador, Claudia Souza.
This study analyses the National Programme for Production and Use of Biodiesel launched by the Brazil Federal Government in 2005 as a public policy to generate sustainable employment and income within the context of development of new alternative sources of energy. It also verifies the impact of PNPB on occupation and income rate of farmers participating in the projects of production of biodiesel through field research carried out on 93 family farms participating in projects already implemented in the State of Goiás. The choice of producers was made at random from a list of all producers who had already gone through a complete cycle of production and stretched across 33 municipalities in the second half of 2007. The survey data was obtained through a...

Relative planting times on the production components in sesame/cowpea bean intercropping in organic system Ciência e Agrotecnologia
Araújo,Afrânio César de; Aloufa,Magdi Ahmed Ibrahim; Silva,Apolino José Nogueira da; Pereira,Walter Esfrain; Oliveira,Cosme Jales de.
Aiming at better land use, small farmers usually plant sesame and cowpea bean intercropped with other crops. The aim of this work was to analyze and quantify the influence of four relative planting times of the cowpea bean in intercropping with sesame from the standpoint of their production components, plant productivity and the index of land equivalent ratio (LER). The field experiment was conducted in a randomized blocks with four treatments and four replicates. The treatments were the sesame and the cowpea bean in intercropping with the cowpea bean planted at the same time, 7, 14 and 21days after than the sesame. A greater part of the production components of both the sesame as well the cowpea bean was affected by the intercropping and significant...

Short food supply chain: characteristics of a family farm Ciência Rural
Aguiar,Luane da Conceição; DelGrossi,Mauro Eduardo; Thomé¹,Karim Marini.
ABSTRACT: Short Food Supply Chains (SFSCs) provide a dependable substitute for conventional supply chains, as their food reflects the characteristics of “local”, “natural”, “healthy” and “reliable”. For the family farmer, the short chains constitute anexcellent way of diversifying their produce, gaining higher added value and thus warranting steadier revenues. This paper thus aims to discern the distinguishing features that the short chains offer, in general, to the family farm. To accomplish this, a literature review was performed to study the works done and approaches conducted on the short chains in the academy, in terms of family farm, and identify their specifications. Positive characteristics related to family farmers were recognizable in comparison...

Structural and Financial Characteristics of U.S. Farms, 1995: 20th Annual Family Farm Report to Congress AgEcon
Sommer, Judith E.; Hoppe, Robert A.; Green, Robert C.; Korb, Penelope J..
National average statistics related to farm production mask the diversity in the Nation's 2 million farms and the people who operate them. Farms in the United States differ not only by size (sales and acres) and type of production, but also by organizational characteristics (land ownership, legal organization, contracting arrangements) and financial characteristics (debt, assets, income, expenditures). Farm operators and their households vary with respect to demographic characteristics (occupation, age, education), financial characteristics (dependence on farm income, operator/spouse labor allocation), and management characteristics (information sources, business goals).

Structure and Strategy, How Do They Match in the Netherlands? AgEcon
van der Veen, Hennie B.; van Bommel, Karel.
Farm organization, and the balance between the household and the farm have changed. This paper explores the relation between the organizational form and strategy of Dutch farmers and shows that strategy and structure are related. Legal persons and partnerships with multiple households can be especially found among the farmers focusing on economies of scale. One-man businesses and the one household partnerships more often show diversification strategies. One-man businesses are relatively more encountered amongst the life style farmers, whilst one household partnerships are stronger present amongst rural entrepreneurs.

Survival and Growth of Family Farms in a Transition Country – The Hungarian Case AgEcon
Bakucs, Lajos Zoltan; Ferto, Imre.
The paper investigates the validity of Gibrat’s Law in Hungarian agriculture. We use FADN data between 2001 and 2007 and employ quantile regression techniques to test the validity of Gibrat’s Law across quantiles. The Law is strongly rejected for all quantiles, providing strong evidence that smaller farms tend to grow faster than larger ones. We provide a number of socio-economic factors that can explain farm growth. Of these we found that total subsidies received by farm and far operator’s age are the most significant factors.

The Choice of Farm Organisation. A Hungarian Case AgEcon
Ferto, Imre; Fogarasi, Jozsef.
The literature on the agricultural transformation in Central an Eastern European countries usually neglect the investigation of organisational forms in agriculture. This paper is the first to analyse the choice of organisation forms in transition agriculture employing transaction cost theory. The analysis is based on Hungarian FADN data in 2003. In general, our results do not support the theoretical predictions on the choice of farm organisation, but confirm the differences in capital level and farm area observed in different farm organisations. The divergence between theory and empirics shed light on the importance of path dependency in explaining of farm organisations.

The Role of Goal Structure in Enterprise Selection in U.S. Agriculture AgEcon
Mishra, Ashok K.; Gillespie, Jeffrey M..
Farmers are likely to be motivated by alternative goals besides profit maximization. Goal structure is highly influential in farmer enterprise selection decisions. This paper addresses the roles of goal structure, location, financial situation, and socio-demographic variables and their influence on farmers' farm enterprise selection decisions. This study uses the 2003 Agricultural Resource Management Survey (ARMS), a national farm-level data, and Tobit method to examine the impacts of goal structure and resource availability on enterprise choice. Results indicate that goal structure significantly influences enterprise selection. Farmers who indicated their primary reason for becoming a farm operator was to "Take over operation of the farm from a family...

The Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997: Provisions for Farmers and Rural Communities AgEcon
Monke, James D.; Durst, Ron L..
Under the Taxpayer Relief Act of 1997, most farmers will pay less Federal income tax, and farm families will find it easier to transfer the family farm across generations. The new law--the tax portion of 1997 legislation to balance the Federal budget by 2002--emerges from years of debate on proposals for tax simplification, broad tax reduction, and targeted relief for capital gains and estate taxes. The legislation is expected to generate a net tax reduction of $95 billion over 5 years for all taxpayers. A number of general and targeted tax relief provisions will reduce Federal taxes significantly for farmers and other rural residents, but also will increase the complexity of both Federal income and estate taxes. Farmers are expected to save more than $1.6...
